So many terrific songs on there! I was just a pre-teen at the time, but I still remember them well. Right in that time just before MTV came to dominate music in the 80s.

Takes me back to the last part of my sophomore year of high school.... Great tunes and memories!

Review of the day

On May 9, 1970 Melody Maker carried a brief review of The Whos May 2nd show in Sheffield

With tickets sold out two days in advance a packed Sheffield Students Union last Saturday anticipated an exciting evening with the Who -- but things got off to a slow start.

Following a mediocre performance by the Union Group, Super Fly, the 1,500 string auidence was slow to warm to the Whos opening number Eternal Life

However, they soon generated a more characteristic atmosphere with their classic I Cant Explain which possibly would have been a more appropriate opening number.

As the performance reached its crescendo, white boiler suits and ____ boots added tot he visual magnetism which is all part of the Who.

Its peak began with The Seeker, which Townhend describes as something like a herd of elephants How right he is!

The undoubled climax came with the rock opera Thomas which was new to me but still enjoyable.

So Tommy ended and we were left with old rock numbers such as Summertime Blues and Shakin All Over.

The concert ended with what, for me, is the track that symbolizes everything the Who stand for, My Generation

Judging by the thunder from the audience the Who had not only gained many friends, they had further entrenched themselves as on of Britains great groups. -- PAUL POTTSImage attachment

Concert of the day

On May 9, 1969 The Who presented Tommy to America for the first time at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan. The supporting act was Joe Cocker & The Grease Band.

This venue gets the honors because it is run by Pete's old art school friend and former Who photographer Tom Wright. Wright tapes the show on a portable Nagra recorder.

The story of Bill Curbishley’s rise in The Who is very interesting. As detailed in Roger’s book, Bill did time in prison and once he was released he was working at Track Records for Lambert and Stamp. Roger took note of his work ethic, and hired him to be his personal manager after Stamp basically laughed in Roger’s face when he confronted Stamp about a lack of label support for his solo album. From both Roger and Bill began auditing the cash flow and discovered huge discrepancies, this led to hiring Bill as the full time manager for the band. Roger basically set The Who into the direction of really making the money they deserved.

One of the few cases you hear about where a manager does right by a band/artist.

Moon would have been loved by the cartels of South America ... just imagine if Moon had Met Escobar

Japan and South America, eh? Imagine the carnage Moon would have caused there - not sure he'd have been allowed either in, or, out once he started his shenanigans.....

Movie scene of the day

On May 8, 1974 The Who begin three days of filming the "Pinball Wizard" sequence with Elton John at the King's Theatre in the Albert Road, Portsmouth.

The extras are students from the local Portsmouth Polytechnic. Pete, while smashing his guitar for the cameras, accidentally brains one of the female students, sending her to hospital. Pete later gives her the guitar

Yes it's sore to watch now as its incredibly dated but it's an iconic piece of musical movie history.

Unbelievable scene. The energy is insane. Hands down the best scene in the movie.

As a 'thank you' to the unpaid extras, the band played a special free concert for them at the nearby Portsmouth Guildhall on May 22, 1974 - 4 days after they played Charlton. This was the only show in 1974 where they played 'Eyesight To The Blind'

What was also mental was Moonie and Reed touring the pubs in Portsmouth creating havoc.

Great film watched it when it came out

And John used two different basses.

❤❤❤
