Relay
Venue: The Palaeur, Rome, Italy, Thursday, September 14, 1972 Recording: Audience Comments: The cover states "soundboard recording" - I have my doubts. This seems to have been recorded from PT's side of the stage as the guitar is prominent. He also seems to not have had such a great evening on this one. The guitar is in and out of tune, he misses notes and the set generally seems marred by plenty of miscues. There is a fair amount of audience chatter and the recording sounds as though it was lifted from an old vinyl copy with pleny of hiss and scratchiness to spare. The audience screams and cheers as though they’re at a fucking Beatles concert. That’s downright frightening! On the other hand, where in the hell has this recording been for the past 25 years?! Interesting that they played Relay. My Gen- eration is quite short and goes straight into Naked Eye. The intro to Summertime Blues is botched by Pete but it could be explained that he might’ve had some guitar trouble. Perhaps the evening’s “festivities” started a bit early in Rome that day? Who the fuck knows?
After a long-promised and overdue reassessment of this recording, I like it a lot bett- er this time around. I think this is often what bootlegs are about - at least - to a cer- tain extent - hearing a great band that earned its reputation through playing live hav- ing an “off” night hitting a few sour notes here and there, missing the odd cue or two - not something you’re likely to hear listening to most of the “store-bought” crap. I dig it but you can take it or leave it. Perhaps more something for die-hard WHO freaks and serious collectors.
