Bill's Pete Townshend Pages › I AM

I AM

Townshend is present on only five tracks (out of eight), but one of them is the original version of "Baba O'Riley"
which, at 9:48, is almost twice as long as the augmented version which opens Who's Next.
On I Am the piece is entirely played by Townshend, who says of the synthesizer which dominates the piece, "Baba...it played itself?"
(This would be Townshend's first use of synthesizers, which showed up prominently on "The Who's" album, Who's Next.)

SIDE ONE

Forever's No Time At All/This Song Is Green
Released on Track Records 2094-109, 1973.  (UK)

1. FOREVER'S NO TIME AT ALL....
WORDS : Katie McInnernery
MUSIC: Billy Nicholls
accoustic guitar and vocals : Billy Nicholls
drums, bass and electric guitars Caleb Quaye

And nothing sure is forever
When forever's no time at all
As I lie amongst the heather bed
High above the ocean's roar

I seem to hear my name being called
Yet who am I waiting for
And I love the lover who loves with
All the love he has and more

And now that the summer's ending
And your baby cries out to sea
I do feel that I am drowning
In the love that you're sending me

And now that the summer's ending
And your baby cries out to sea
I do feel that I am drowning
In the love that you're sending me

3. AFFIRMATION...
WORDS : Mike Da Costa
MUSIC : Spontaneous
sax and vocal : Mike Da Costa
bass guitar : Ronnie Lane
guitars and drums : Peter Townshend
piano : Ian McLagen

Yes Yes Yes, is what it is,
and what it is is love,
and love is what it's all about
in the frantic panic of day to day depths
over schizophrenic city

Yes Yes Yes is the stuff that makes it work and hold together,
how it fits into the twines and how the rhythm flows,
like the river Siddharthe sat by.
Yes Yes, is the music there for listening,
is the poetry there for perception for even tired eyes?
Let's rub noses in the smell of things,
fingers through grubby summer grasses,
as polluted pearls burst over rooftops;
hope encapsulating a moment of truth in a moment of time.

Yes, Yes, it's a moments like this I can run barefoot
over wet paving stones that the city performs its bitter
reflections without regret,
for it's in good hands, in good hands,
the hands of the Master.

Yes Yes Yes, just this feeling, just the feeling, the feeling,
you can feel it; I can feel it,
streaming through me, continuous, enchanting rhythm,
and the rhythm's enchanting,
and the rhythm's like season rhythms,
river rhythms, sea rhythms, sun rhythms, love rhythms,
and even in the roaring traffic's rude rhythms,
overlapped the electronic chains;
city birds chirp communications.
Oh Yes, Yes

And the love flows on
feeling in the misused madness
which works to separate the unity of all creation,
and the chains which would bind us,
and in my bones,
and in the inner functions of my unbelievable being.

Yes Yes Yes Yes
And the love flows on, and the love flows on,
and the love flows on, and the love flows on.

And in the million frowns,
and in the million sightless eyes,
jostling for a place in the circle of perfection;
and I can feel it in you who listen to the song
and in you who do not listen to the song
and in you who may never hear the song,
Oh Yes, Yes

And the love flows on, never ending,
never resting,
everywhere and in everything that manifests.
Is there anything which God isn't?

And in my heart I want to say I love you;
and in my prayer I want to say I love you;
and I love you, and I love you
and you and you and you and you and you .....
and yes and yes and yes and yes
and the love flows on, and the love flows on......

4. BABA O'RILEY...
MUSIC & INSTURMENTS PLAYED BY : Pete Townshend
SYNTHESISER BY : Baba......it played itself ?

SIDE TWO

1. THIS SONG IS GREEN...
WORDS : Billy Nicholls
MUSIC : Billy Nicholls
guitar and vocals : Billy Nicholls
synthesised flute  : Pete Townshend

Of this man I must
sing a song or turn to dust,
'cos I know eventually, he will sing to me,
whispering through the leaves,
whispering songs of silent bliss.
Such a love I can't resist,
and it is both you and me,
and the stars above,
whispering through the leaves,
whispering songs of love.

But this song is green,
'cos the world I've never seen.
And it's just another light,
breaking out the day,
bringing on the night.
What it is I cannot say,
and the tune I cannot play,
but I know there is a key;
lift your eyes and see,
it's reality.
And this song is green.

2. EVERYWHERE I LOOK THIS MORNING...
WORDS, MUSIC & ARRANGEMENT BY : Hank Mindlin
violes : Connie  Ehmke, David lawson
cello : Loel Miller
flute : Stephanie Getz
clarinet : Little Remer
piano : Bernie Schwartz
bass guitar : George Turner
drums : Dave Overton
voices : Judy Ardine, Neal Crockett, Carol Leigh Duce,
Sonya Lawson, Marty Lewis

Everywhere I look this morning
people singing such a wondrous sound.
Everywhere I look this morning,
love's stream flowing all around.

Must be 'cos the Master's here,
bringing love and destroying fear.
All the feelings I can't explain
come together in Baba's name.

Everywhere I look this morning
trees and flowers have a song to sing
they say it's been such a long long winter
giving way to eternal spring

Must be 'cos the Master's here,
bringing love and destroying fear.
All the feelings I can't explain
come together in Baba's name.

Everywhere I look this morning
selfishness is giving way to love.
When we look deep within our own hearts
we find the treasures we've been dreaming of.

Must be 'cos the Master's here,
bringing love and destroying fear.
All the feelings I can't explain
come together in Baba's name.

Everywhere I look this morning
people seeing that we all are one.
All confusion is but a shadow
when you turn around and see the sun.

Must be 'cos the Master's here,
bringing love and destroying fear.
All the feelings I can't explain
come together in Baba's name.

Must be 'cos the Master's here,
bringing love and destroying fear.
All the feelings I can't explain
come together in Baba's name.

Baba's name.

3. DRAGON...
WORDS AND MUSIC : Dave Hastilow
guitar and vocals : Dave Hastilow
synethsisers : Dave Hastilow & Pete Townshend
organ : Roger Seiji

As I walk out on the street,
the lamps are shining bright,
and the rain begins to fall;
gonna be another wet night.

And I stand with my back to the wall,
waiting for your call,
then I'll know you love me,
just like you ought to do,
just like you us taught to do,
whooooo.

So you turn on to a mirror,
and the reflection of all you saw,
now the path is in front of you,
another boarded  door.

And I stand here a-smiling,
waiting for his call.
We all know he loves us,
just like we knew he did,
right down beyond the years,
and beyond the din of all.

Every day the dragon comes
with its many heads.
With a sword of truth in my hand,
I have laid it dead.

Only 'cos there's love in my heart,
just like at the start.
And you and I were never apart,
just like it ought to be,
just like he made me see
whoooooo.

As I walk out on the street,
the stars are shining bright.
And the ground a heavenly rose,
that shines ever so bright.

And I stand here in ecstasy,
I look back at the tears;
I have seen my Master,
after all of these years.
Now I know he loves me;
now I ain't got any fears;
please accept a gift of tears.
Whoooooo.

4. O'PARVARDIGAR...
ADAPTED FROM " THE MASTERS PRAYER" by Pete Townshend
music and instruments : Pete Townshend

O Parvardigar, the Preserver and Protector of all
Without beginning are you Lord without end
Non-dual , beyond compare, and none can measure You
Without color, expression, or form, nor attributes to live

You are unlimited and unfathomable
Imperishable beyond conception by our minds
Nothing can devied you ,oh God you are eternal
None can see you but with eyes divine

You always were, You always are, and always will be
You are everywhere, in everything and beyond
In the firmament above and in the deep
On all the seven planes and farther on
And in all that’s hidden to our eyes and always see

Beyond the trinity of words and in the vow
You can not be perceived or no one shall repent
O Parvardigar preserve protect us all
Without beginning are you Lord without end
You always were, You always are, and always will be

You are the Creator, the Lord of Lords
The knower of all minds and hearts
Omnipotent, omnipresent, from you we cower
You are Knowledge, Infinite Bliss, Infinite Power

You are the ocean of knowledge knowing all
Infinitely knowing, but can but tell
The knower of the past, the present and future
crowning even this, your knowledge it’s self

Oh merciful benevolent eternal
Your the trinity of Knowledge, Truth and Bliss
You are the scorce of Truth, The One with infinite attributes
You are the ocean of love we sorely miss

You always were, You always are, and always will be
You are the Ancient One, the Highest of the High
You are Prabhu and Parameshwar
You are the Beyond God, Beyond-Beyond God also
Parabrahma; Paramatma and Allah
Yezdan; Ahuramazda and God the Beloved

O Parvardigar, the Preserver and Protector of all
Without beginning are you Lord without end
