Pete’s Gear: Rose Morris, Co., LTD, Rickenbacker 1993

A Rose Morris, Co., LTD, Rickenbacker 1993 once owned by Pete Townshend, courtesy Paul Griggs.

Paul Griggs: I purchased a secondhand Rickenbacker 1993 12-string guitar from Pan Musical Instruments in Shaftsbury Avenue on 12 February 1968. There were two Rickenbacker 12-strings on the wall and the guy in the shop said that they had both belonged to Pete Townshend, which in those days didn’t mean a great deal apart from the fact that they were not in the best of condition. I can’t remember if they were both 1993s but I purchased the one with least damage, which was a 1993. It cost me £110 and I kept it for around four years during which time I lent it to Steve Howe who used it on the track “Starship Trooper” on “The Yes Album.”

Regretfully I sold it in 1971 to Carlsboro’s shop in Mansfield for £150. This is probably the one thing in my life I regret the most, as even without the Pete Townshend connection they are worth a lot of money.

Here are three photos of myself with my 1993 including one when my band “The Cortinas” performed at The Marquee.

Tremendous thanks to Paul for providing this info. For more on Paul Griggs, see his website: paulgriggs.com.
