Record Crowd at River Festival
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) – “The Who,” a British rock group, made history Monday night by closing out the third Mississippi River Festival before a crowd of nearly 34,000 on the campus of Southern Illinois University.
Festival officials described the crowd, nearly half of which arrived four hours before concert time, as orderly.
Twenty-five buses were used to shuttle listeners to the festival site from traffic-jammed roads. The crowd more than doubled the previous festival record of 15,671, set in 1970 for a performance of “Chicago.”
