I’m going to begin “blogging” about what I’m doing “behind the scenes”.
I’ll post elsewhere about who I am and what this site is really all about. These posts will just be to update you on what I am working on, and what I’m planning.
As this is the first post of this type, I’ll just give a “short” explanation:
For many years I’ve used this particular “CMS” (Content management system) for my own personal use. thewho.net was run on a different version of wordpress and I used this just to compile EVERYTHING I had on The Who. It was never very pretty and I never worried too much about speed (ie image sizes), not functionality. I was able to access everything i wanted without much trouble, but only had “long term” plans to make it “presentable”
When facebook removed thewho.net page – I was given an opportunity to spend time on my website rather than on social media. I will write more about that another time.
My primary concern when I started was presenting “Today in Whostory” in a “nice” fashion. I’m not a “graphic designer” so I’m not sure I’ve actually succeeded, however, I have learned enough to use the tools so that if someone has an idea of how it should really work, I should be able to give them the needed resources. Step 1 accomplished
Step 2 has been getting all the “assets” (images/links/files) better organized and more “presentable”. I had always just uploaded full size images and didn’t bother with compression or speed – since it was only me, I didn’t mind waiting a few seconds – and was only using this on desktop – so didn’t worry about mobile at all. The past few weeks I’ve spent countless hours testing plugins to wordpress to help me get everything “updated”, and I’m in the “final stretch” – thousands of images have been “compressed” and new “thumbnails” created so that things can be served as quickly as possible.
I’m still testing some other plugins and services to help with the performance issues. I have a LOT of images and it’s taking awhile to get everything sorted….but I see a light at the end of the tunnel!!
Stay tuned for more updates. I know most of you haven’t read this far, and that’s ok. For those of you interested in what I’m working on, please comment – let me know I’m not alone! 🙂
