THE WHO rocked a packed Wembley Stadium on Saturday with thunderflashes, lasers, and the sounds that have inspired films ("Tommy") and kept thousands of faithful fans with them.

The concert, well timed to coincide with the release of the "Quadraphenia" film and the showing of the documentary "The Kids Are Alright", can only add momentum to the recent Mod revival, writes Stan James.

The performance by The Who began, appropriately but sadly, with "Substitute" and by the end had taken the audience through a generation of music, climaxing with green and red lasers piercing the blackness around the stadium and beaming across the audience as Roger Daltry sang "See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me".

Thunderflashes brought us back to reality and the Masters of Rock rounded their show off with more vintage numbers, including "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "My Generation".

The end of the concert was heralded by the white light of the stadium floodlights. The atmosphere seemed more like the last night of the Proms than a capacity Wembley crowd going home.

Despite a tepid response to "Sister Disco" from the "Who Are You" album, The Who proved once again that they are the supreme rock band.

Nils Lofgren, AC/DC and The Stranglers provided the early entertainment.
