ON SUNDAY, the first of two concerts by Herman's Hermits and company at Music Hall was witnessed by the writer, his head duly shorn for military reserve duty. It stuck out like a sore thumb (or head) amidst the longer-haired types there, about 1200 heads in number.

On the program were The Who, a fast-rising group; the Blues Magoos, who appeared here not long ago; and, of course, Herman.

The Magoos, currently riding a successful Mercury album titled "Psychedelic Lollipop," displayed their brand of the current phenomenon known as acid rock. Theirs is a gutsy (if somewhat raw) and powerful sound.

The Hermits, old-timers by rock standards (they've been around more than three years), are quite one of the best groups going.

They are polished singers, musicians and performers (rock groups must perform, since the music itself is rarely justification for being on a stage). They have contributed a number of hit tunes to the repertoire and can be expected to continue doing the same.
