Tuesday, November 24th, 1964

The Who start a 16-week residency playing Tuesday nights at The Marquee Club, London. The Marquee Club started out on Oxford Street in 1958 as one of London's greatest jazz clubs but by 1964, when it was forced to move to a new location on Wardour Street, it was better known for the new electric R&B played by Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds and The Moody Blues. The Who took over the dead night of Tuesday and on the first night only 30 people show up even with Kit and Chris giving out free whisky. To build attendance they start plastering Soho with a striking new poster. The opening act their first night is The Sneakers.
