More than 70,000 fans packed the Silverdome in Pontiac Thursday night to see the legendary Who, in what was billed as the British group’s last American tour.

Supported by a 40-foot-high sign announcing the group and a video screen above the stage, singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, drummer Kenney Jones and bassist John Entwistle gave the audience what they came for — lots of hard-driving rock and roll.

Daltrey pranced around the stage like he owned the place and Townshend frantically played and leaped around. Jones and Entwistle simply let their playing do the talking.

The rockers owned the audience moments into their opening number, “Substitute.” The group then mixed some of its standbys with numbers from the new album, “It’s Hard.”

Eddie Money and the Clash opened the show.
