The Who could have sold 8 times as many

In response to a single ad in the Sunday Examiner & Chronicle of Feb. 22, Bill Graham’s office received 43,000 mail orders for tickets to Winterland concerts by The Who on March 27 and 28.

Five thousand of those envelopes were selected at random, and those lucky ones have a pair of tickets on the way. The other 38,000 fans of the British rock group will get their $18.70 checks back uncashed.

But Examiner readers still have a chance to go — free! For the Examiner will be giving away six pairs of tickets for The Who’s opening night. Details are in the box above, which will be published several more days.

The Who — Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle and Keith Moon — have 11 LPs, virtually all “gold records” in sales, world tours (including a half-dozen sold-out North American pilgrimages) and such original concepts as “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia” to their credit.
