The best of punk confronted the public with raw energy. It gave teenagers new impetus in their never-ending search for image. That threw up new mod bands and the past triumphs of The Who were lauded by imitators. Then the real life rock ’n roll survivor himself comes along and puts them all in their place.

Townshend understands raw energy; he has used it all his musical life in explosive fits of destructive creation that have cost thousands of pounds. But he also has an immense talent and when the two are harnessed you get an album like this — well worth waiting for and one to treasure for the next decade.

This is an album that is complete: in which lyrics, concept, music and delivery are all at a peak. Enough said.
