Vocals have never sounded more assured. The best numbers of the night were their two classics, "My Generation," and "Won't Get Fooled Again," which together represent the most definitive statement about a rock and roller's vision of the world.
The synthesizer riff from "Won't Get Fooled Again" was perfectly executed, as it was on the earlier "Baba O'Reilly," and near the end of the song, the Who resorted to a touch of theatrics.
Following a long synthesizer section which is broken by a series of drum rolls, Daltry delivered the now-legendary scream of outrage and defiance, and at that point four fire pots erupted with a blast of flame that momentarily blinded the audience. Even Kiss never matched the intensity of that explosion.
A friend of mine who had seen the Who three times in the late '60s told me that they were at least as good in St. Paul as they were a decade ago. I have no choice but to believe him.
