GIRLS FAINT IN BATH POP FRENZY

HUNDREDS of pop fans provided just the right atmosphere for a concert by The Who at Bath Pavilion last night—as a film unit took candid camera shots for a television documentary.

Teenage girls fainted in the crush of bodies against the stage and the group's wild man at the drums, mop-haired Keith Moon beat out a frenzy of emotion through the packed hall. All the time the movie cameras whirred on.

Athletic attendants dived off stage into the screaming throng and passed the girls who had been overcome to backstage exits, and fresh air.

The show climax came with The Who best-seller "I'm a boy," featuring lead guitarist Pete Townshend—in a blinding red-and-white striped sweatshirt.

DOORS CLOSED

It was also the climax for the film unit, from American C.B.S. Films. The crew had spent all afternoon setting out high power arc lights and cables for the cameramen. Shots from their reels will feature in the finished documentary, which deals with British pop groups.

So many fans went along that the doors were closed on dozens of disappointed youngsters half-an-hour before the group's 40-minute performance began.

. . and the centre of their interest was Peter Townshend, the lead guitarist.
