A guitar given to Pete Townshend by Eric Clapton has sold for 375,000, believed to be an internet sales record.

It was bought by a mystery buyer during a week-long online auction that raised more than 3160,000 for flood and drought victims in Mozambique and Ethiopia.

Townshend, guitarist with The Who, donated the 1957 Fender Stratocaster for sale with other rock items. Last week, Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Townshend bought the instrument for Tony Blair, who handed it back to the auction.
