The Who Who's Next (reissue with new bonus tracks; MCA)
Long regarded as one of the most important albums of the rock era, Who's Next was cobbled together from the remnants of the Who's aborted Lifehouse project. This remastered re-issue includes seven bonus tracks from the 1971 Lifehouse sessions — four of them never before released. They are: A scorched-earth meltdown of Marvin Gaye's "Baby Don't You Do It;" the exuberant first take of "Pure and Easy;" an ominous first run-through of "Behind Blue Eyes" and a live take of "Water" (a later version was the B-side of 5:15). Also excavated is "I Don't Even Know Myself," the quirky B-side of Won't Get Fooled Again.
The 12 pages of new liner notes (from Pete Townshend and others) help put the Who's music in a historical context: The Who's unbridled anarchy, barely harnessed power and guitar-smashing rage qualify them as the original punk band. Alongside the epic sweep of "Baba O'Riley," "Won't Get Fooled" and "Bargain," these new offerings from their most fertile creative period fortify the Who's towering legacy. **** (Listening code: 0954)
