Who’s gone electric again? Pete Townshend, that’s who

The Who will rock into the 21st century.

British rock icons The Who announced yesterday a summer greatest-hits tour, which will bring them to the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel on July 1. Tickets, a hefty $35.50-$152, go on sale 9 a.m. Saturday through Ticketmaster and the Arts Center’s box office.

The tour coincides with the release of a new live album, “The Blues to the Bush,” that was recorded last year at Chicago’s House of Blues and in London.

The music, which includes Who songs never before recorded, will be released as a custom CD where fans can select the songs they want in the order they prefer and as a download from the musicmaker.com Web site, according to thewholive.com on the Internet.

Guitarist Pete Townshend, singer Roger Daltrey, and bassist John Entwistle, all original members, will be joined by drummer Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr’s son, and longtime Who keyboardist John “Rabbit” Bundrick for the tour.

Original Who drummer Keith Moon died in 1978.

Townshend will play an electric rather than acoustic guitar on the tour. He’s been performing “unplugged” for recent shows, including the band’s 1997 “Quadrophenia” tour which also came to the Arts Center. The Arts Center’s concert hotline for more information is (732) 335-8698.

The Who formed in 1963 and have produced hits like “My Generation,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Pinball Wizard,” from their groundbreaking rock opera “Tommy.”
