The Who ... Simply Fantastic Rockers

Review The Who, Telewest Arena.

ANYWAY, anyhow, anywhere, you looked at it last night The Who were simply fantastic.

From the moment they came on to I Can't Explain to the final four-song encore two hours later they enthused the crowd with hit after hit.

This has to be one of the best live concerts I have ever seen – Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, and John Entwhistle deserve their place among rock's royalty.

In this day of manufactured boy bands it was a delight to watch a group that could not only perform their songs well but also to absolute perfection.

Here were three blokes who knew how to make a crowd rock and what superb musicians – I knew Townsend was a great guitarist but last night he blew me away as they ran through their repetoire.

Substitute, Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again, Teenage Wasteland, You Better, You Bet were just some of the favourites that delighted the audience.

There was the added bonus for all us old punk rockers of a support act of Joe Strummer who played a set mainly of old Clash songs.

But back to the highlight – for an encore The Who did an updated version of The Kids Are All Right and finished with what has become their anthem – My Generation.

It's a good job these guys didn't die before they got old.
