A Jaguar driver was seriously injured in a five-vehicle crash on the M1 early today. Four other people were hurt in the crash on the southbound carriageway of the motorway at Gayhurst, near Newport Pagnell, Bucks. The slow lane was already blocked by road works and wreckage blocked the two fast lanes for some time.

The Jaguar is believed to have been in collision with the rear of a beer lorry in the centre lane, and three more cars, a Ford Cortina, a Ford Lincoln and a Morris Traveller ran into the first two.

Driving the Lincoln was 20-year-old Pete Townshend, of Wardour Street, Soho, lead guitarist with The Who pop group.

The driver of the Jaguar, Mr. Jack Kitto, of Ringwood Road, Ferndown, Dorset, received serious chest injuries.

three people in the Cortina were also slightly injured. They were Mr. James Riordan, of Flack Caravan Site, Hook, Hants; Mr. Michael Riordan, of Clarendon Road, Luton, Beds; and Mrs. Eileen McGuinness, of the same address.

All the injured are detained in Northampton General Hospital.
