LENOX — A crowd of about 22,000 teeny-boppers and young adults, largest attendance in the 20-year history of Tanglewood, crammed the Berkshire Music Center grounds, last night for performances of rock, blues and psychedelic lights.

Previous attendance record at Tanglewood was 15,242 persons who turned out for a 1965 performance of Verdi’s “Otello” by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

‘King of Blues’ Last night’s performers included B. B. King, who bills himself as “King of Blues,” a rock group from England called The Who, and a rock group from San Francisco, the Jefferson Airplane. Visual accompaniment was provided by the Joshua Light Show from Fillmore East, a discotheque in New York City.

A fellow wearing camouflage levis and a beard explained the psychedelic lighting to this reporter. He said that the light is projected on a screen from behind and that about 80 per cent of the light comes through. When asked how he knew so much about it, he said he was with the “Airplane,” setting up their instruments.

Light shows have only been around for about two years on the East Coast but have been going for about five years on the West Coast, he commented. When asked if the bright lights are supposed to reproduce the effects of an acid trip, he smiled and faded away into the crowd.
