ROGER DALTERY ... lead singer of Who. Times photo

ANAHEIM Continued from First Page

But where the Stones represent total rebellion, the Who serve a much wider purpose. The Townshend-led foursome reflects much of the determination, confusion, pride, frustration of young people.

On stage, the group radiates power, showmanship and sensuality. Townshend, on lead guitar, punctuates everything the Who does with a fierce, uncompromising, almost machine gun-like musical style.

Lead singer Roger Dallery (a master of the microphone swing), drummer Keith Moon (a torrent of energy) and bass player John Entwistle (almost unnoticed because of the exaggerated motions of the other three) join Townshend in the excellent group.

The Who's 1½-hour performance included selections from "Tommy," "Young Man Blues," "Summertime Blues," "Shakin' All Over," "The Seeker" and "Magic Bus." It was a dazzling display of rock at its highest level. The audience, generally, was at the same level.
