The Who pop group may appear at the Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, on Saturday, November 28 — but only if the students can provide the facilities they demand.

The four-man group have laid down stringent specifications regarding the size of the hall, stage-size, height and lighting. The students' social committee were today deciding whether these demands could be met.

If the answer is yes—and the students are confident it will be —The Who will roll into Coventry in three trucks carrying seven tons of stage equipment.

They will roll out after the concert at the Polytechnic Hall £1,200 richer.

That is their fee for the one night stand, which will involve about two hours on stage.

Stage antics

The vice-president of the Students Union, Mr Roger Everitt, said today that The Who's contract required the provision of two 18 ft. columns to carry sophisticated lighting equipment.

Safety fences would also have to be provided.

Mr. Everitt said the students' stages would be adequate to meet specifications laid down by the group, but they would be reinforcing them further.

"This is not so much because of the weight of the equipment, but to support the group's jumping around and stage antics," he said.

The students would be hiring five bouncers at £5 each for the night. Other costs would amount to about £35.

Various events

Yet only 1,150 students will be admitted—probably at £1 each.

"A loss on a group such as this is made up when a lesser-known group, charging less, are hired," Mr. Everitt said.

He said the students' social secretary, Mr. Bob Jones, organised the weekly functions held at the Polytechnic. Functions alternated between a concert, dance and discotheque.

Recent attractions had included The Free, and also Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Some of the concerts and dances have been open to the public. But The Who event will be strictly for students only.

The Who entertained at the Polytechnic two years ago.
