The Who, Odeon, New Street.
THEY don't throw bits of broken guitar at the audience any more — just tambourines.
But Pete Townshend's fabulous flying circus, otherwise known as The Who, is still a unique rock experience to rock the senses. What a leaping, twirling, whirling bunch of dervishes!
Drummer Keith Moon enhanced his already mighty reputation with a fine exhibition of controlled frenzy. He also threw a seemingly inexhaustible supply of drumsticks at erring road managers.
Some numbers were disappointingly banal, notably the last one. But when they hit the right wavelength, with such items as "Barbara Reilly," "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Tommy" excerpts, they can still make some of the best sounds around.
They may be in danger of losing that precious sound, however, in a welter of new equipment. Apart from some ear-shattering feedback last night, the infernal machines almost electrocuted Townshend. Rock might not survive such a loss.
