Who Breaks Up Hotel Room

The British rock group The Who, famous for smashing their instruments on stage, were taken into police custody along with 14 members of their entourage Monday after $6,000 damage was done to their posh hotel suite in Montreal. No charges were placed and the musicians were released after paying the bill in cash.

Fern Roberge, general manager of the Hotel Bonaventure, said his staff was called about 5 a.m. by other hotel guests who complained of loud noises and breaking sounds in the group’s $80-a-day suite.

"The security and night manager went to the room and when they saw the damage they called police," Roberge said. "There was extensive damage — all the furniture was broken, along with the plate glass windows, the TV, radio and the marble.

"They had just been throwing furniture out the window onto the patio."

The Who performed Sunday evening at the Montreal Forum.

Callas Shrugs Off Critics

Opera singer Maria Callas says she does not intend to be written off despite the unfavorable comments from critics after her return to the stage in London.

Critics called her voice "weak" "colorless" and even "squally" when she appeared after eight years of retirement. Replied Callas: "Nobody really expects me to be what I was 20 years ago . . . I'll improve my voice a bit more with each concert. In a year's time I'm sure I'll be better than I am now."
