The year 201964. The place 2d the Railway Hotel, Wealdstone. An "R&B" group called The High Numbers were recognised as a cut above the rest. But little did anyone realise the international success the same group was to have under its new name 2d The Who.
Ten years later there can be few places where The Who have not appeared. Their latest move has been into films. Ken Russell has been making a screen version of "Tommy". The Who's first rock opera. It was composed by lead guitarist Pete Townshend and the group recorded it several years ago.
The film will be released next year, meantime Saturday seems to be "Who-day". BBC Radio One devotes an hour (starting 2 p.m.) called "Who's Who" and later BBC2 television presents "2nd House" giving another 90 minutes of The Who including film of the performance at Charlton.
