Singer Robert Daltry of The Who swung his microphone wildly in the air, greeted more than 11,000 persons at the Springfield Civic Center Sunday night and belted out "I Can't Explain."

Spectators, enthralled by the singer's booming voice and slick dance steps, clapped and shouted as Daltry led the four-man band into two hours of singing and dancing.

"We're all glad to be in Massachusetts," Daltry said, bringing an ear-shattering scream from the crowd. "We want to make you happy."

Several audience members scrambled to the stage as the group continued to sing their familiar hits "Substitute, Teenage Wasteland and Blue Eyes."

The group, performing 12 years, consists of lead guitarist Peter Townshend, guitarist John Entwistle, bass drummer Keith Moon and Daltry.

Civic Center Director Gerald M. Healy said Moon was uncomfortable Sunday night with an injured heel, stitched earlier last week.

Healy said a doctor from Wesson Memorial Hospital was expected to give Moon medication to dull the pain.

"It makes it hard for him to keep the beat, that's all," Healy said.

However, The Who fans seemed oblivious to any trouble with the group and only continued to cheer, whistle and applaud throughout the night.

The group appeared on stage after a 40-minute intermission. Preceding the intermission, The Maytalls kept the audience alive with Jamaican beat music.

Springfield police said the concert was "just about filled to capacity" but reported no trouble. By 10 p.m., police said one youth was taken into protective custody while another was brought to the station on drug charges.

Personnel from the producer, Don Law Presents, were stationed at backstage entrances, preventing anyone from going beyond the outside arena.

A spokesman from Para-Medic Ambulance Service said no one had been treated by late Sunday night.

Police arrested an 18-year-old Simsbury, Conn. youth at the concert, charging him with possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute and possession of a Class D substance.

Thomas A. Pleasant of 1582 Hop Meadow is scheduled for arraignment this morning in Springfield District Court.
