One of the most important song writers of modern times has come up with a vibrant and varied album. Obviously at times this sounds like material from a Who offering and a few of the tracks have the same feel as "Quadrophenia."

On the other hand, it's a very fresh selection. Many of the cuts use the accepted Townshend formula — a rocking start and finish with a melodic middle section. He is a past master of this style.

Arguably the best track is "Empty Glass," with the biting and at times beautiful music. Then there are the all-out rockers such as "Cats in the cupboard" and "Rough boys," and the lighter offerings like "Keep on working."

It's a finely moulded package which shows what a fine vocal range Townshend has, and it promises to be one of the more outstanding solo albums of the year.
