THE Who kicked off their British tour at Leicester's Granby Halls last week. And what a disappointment it was.

One of the major criticisms I have heard levelled against The Who recently is that they rely too much on their past glories.

Well they certainly didn't do that on the night. They played plenty of songs from their forthcoming album. Of course they did play quite a lot of old stuff – notably Substitute, which got the packed audience going and showed flashes of their true brilliance.

But sadly they were beset with feedback problems and Pete Townsend seemed to be having trouble with his guitars, changing them at regular intervals.

I left the concert feeling like a jig-saw with a piece missing and I imagine that morale in the dressing rooms would be far from high.
