Sometimes boring… sometimes stunning, but if it's a Who concert, then it has to be an occasion.

The two concerts in Southampton were a bonus if only because it is not often they play the provinces, but even more so because of rumours — yet again — of a possible break-up.

Pete Townsend's arrogant punk pose would normally be enough for an electrified show, but it has to be said that minds began to wander through vast chunks of the Who's newer material.

And just when you think it's all going to be a big disappointment, they explode!

The guitar riff everybody knows, a laser light to add the cutting edge and it's a roaring Who we all want to see.

Singer Roger Daltrey, looking fresh from a disco, swung his microphone as if about to take off and the moody Townsend jumped like a spring lamb.

But Kenny Jones was consistently superb on the drums, his timing and talent as straight as the laser lights that cut the air.

“Quiet” John Entwhistle, hardly moved from his spot, seemingly more content to drink from his canister as if on the “Tour de France”.

He proved his voice is as strong as Daltrey's and their tribute to John Lennon — “Twist and Shout” — was touching if not rather good.

Though the protest may have gone there is still some style in the old dogs who have thrashed their way for 17 years. Where will it all end? Who knows?
