5 Are The Who really saying farewell?

Pete Townshend sent 65,000 fans home wondering on Saturday night as the veteran British supergroup wound up its Toronto date on what has been billed as their farewell tour.

Capping a three-song encore, Townshend waved to the packed stadium and shouted: "Thanks, we'll see you soon."

Townshend and Roger Daltrey have hardly kept it secret in recent interviews that after weathering the better part of two decades at the top of the rock heap, the group was falling victim to time and personal differences.

But Townshend's goodbye-for-now remark, combined with Daltrey's polite patter about, gee, how it only seems like yesterday that they were last here, and with never a hint about the tour being a swan song, had the fans wondering if The Who really are calling it quits.

The group's performance may have been more of an indication that the end is in sight. The energy, for a large part of the show, seemed strained
5 almost a performance-by-rote. The band members went through the familiar motions, but only Daltrey and drummer Kenny Jones gave more than the perfunctory effort.

Townshend, for all his patent leaps and windmill sweeps at the guitar, managed only a fraction of the enthusiasm that had made him famous, and bassist John Entwistle, who turned 38 on Saturday, seemed moribund.
