The Who Says Goodbye

NEW YORK (UPI) — About 100 people, including three police officers, received medical attention during a farewell concert at Shea Stadium of the British rock group The Who, authorities said today.

But there was no repeat of the panic at another Who concert when 11 fans died and eight were injured in a stampede in Cincinnati Dec. 5, 1979.

A spokesman for the city’s Emergency Medical Service said 20 people had to be taken to hospitals for injuries ranging from fractured ankles to broken limbs. Some were carried out on stretchers.

A witness said when the band took the stage some overzealous fans surged forward and crushed people in their enthusiasm.

Before The Who took the stage, the Clash, a British new wave band, played for about an hour and singer David Johansen, a former member of the New York Dolls, also performed.

The Who announced earlier this year their current tour of the United States would be their last.

Lead singer Roger Daltrey said at the time of the announcement that tours were damaging to his family life. “I’m not sure they’re worth it anymore,” he said.
