The cheers of 53,000 fans reached a crescendo with each twirl of lead singer Roger Daltrey’s microphone and every one of guitarist Peter Townsend’s leaps across the stage as San Diego bid an enthusiastic farewell to The Who Wednesday night.

While the number of people inside San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium fell short of expectations — promoters had hoped for a crowd of close to 65,000 — those who did show up were generally well behaved, police and security officials said.

San Diego police had made about 70 arrests before The Who came on stage at 8 p.m. — only five minutes late. Most of the arrests were for public drunkenness.

More than 100 persons were treated at first-aid stations set up throughout the stadium; others were treated for intoxication and minor cuts and bruises.

Fans were not the only ones injured. One paramedic was struck with a bottle and punched in the stomach and another was bitten in the hand.

“I just want to go home,” said Elliott Hunter, a paramedic who said
