51,000 rock out with British stars at Coliseum

ANOTHER WINNING TEAM scored big at the Oakland Coliseum last night. This time it was the English rock band, the Who, expanded to 15 members, batting hit after hit song across the field.

From the opening half-hour version of their 20-year-old rock opera "Tommy," with the sold-out crowd of 51,000 singing along on "Pinball Wizard," through "We're Not Gonna Take It," the band of over-40-year-olds seemed determined to prove they weren't too old to play the game.

Although tonight's repeat concert is virtually sold out, producer Bill Graham will have some tickets on sale at the Coliseum ticket booth.

Judging from the increasingly noisy cheers after each song, they were batting at least 1,000.

Muscular, handsome singer Roger Daltrey, 45, bashed two tambourines together and Pete Townshend, 44, did a series of leaps and scissors kicks. Ever-stoic electric bassist John Entwistle, 44, pumped out the rhythm lines with a ferocity that belied his unmoving countenance.
