OAKLAND — Considering the number of British flags in attendance — displayed on T-shirts, wrapping torsos and waving passionately in the wind — concertgoers heralding Tuesday night’s Oakland whistlestop of the Who’s 25th anniversary reunion tour, in a trick of the light, could just as easily have been celebrating the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
It was a decidedly American crowd in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot, however, partying their tailgates off and swilling down the last of their decidedly American beer before the show.
Holding court on the tail of his family stationwagon, elementary school principal Bill Amen, 41, and his 39-year-old brother Phil remembered back to the first time they saw the Who at Fillmore West in 1969. According to Bill and Phil, the Who was on a double bill with Woody Herman, so half the crowd was in their teens and the other half was middle-age. “Sort of like
