That's why he chose me to play the Godfather," said the 52-year-old performer, who contends he's 27¾ years on stage, where "people can fantasize."

"There are certain places which everyone knows, like Wembley in England and Madison Square Garden. When I was a child, we used to get radio broadcasts, complete with static, of say the Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson fight from Madison Square Garden," he said.

"I always wanted to do MSG and suddenly I was doing six sold-out nights with The Who's 'Quadrophenia.' Right outside my dressing room was a big picture of my idol Elvis Presley. Suddenly, it was Glitter over America.

"Back in the 1970s when I came over, I never had corporate sponsors behind me. America was at war in Vietnam and the music didn't have a sense of humor, so it wasn't the right time for glam rock. Kiss broke through a couple of years later. I've sold 20 million records through the years, but somehow it never happened in the States. It almost knocked me over when I heard about the Bulls and Knicks using my song at their sporting events," stated the singer, who was born Paul Gadd in Banbury, Oxon in the U.K.

After the MSG gig, Glitter returned home ready to embark on his own tour. The phone rang for a third time and within two weeks The Who tour itinerary was confirmed. Wrapping up the 25-city tour this week, "Quadrophenia" touches down at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. at 8 tonight, and the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Mixing elements of theater and music concert, "Quadrophenia" tells the tale of a 1960s London Mod named Jimmy, whose personality facets were modeled after the various Who. Joining Glitter on stage is Billy Idol.
