A charity gig featuring legendary Who bass-guitarist John Entwistle and veteran Cotswold band the Stowaways has raised more than 1,000 for Stow-on-the-Wold surgery.

Around 200 people packed into the Stow branch of the Royal British Legion on Saturday night to see the world famous musician perform with the Stowaways at the band's first concert in nearly 30 years.

And a surprise announcement during the show now means that the fundraisers have nearly reached their target of 6,500 to buy a life-saving defibrillator.

Bourton-on-the-Water fundraiser Phyllis Kelly announced that 3,000 that she has raised over the last four years was being put towards the defibrillator appeal.

Phyllis has been raising money for local surgeries and the Moreton-in-Marsh ambulance unit since 1996, when her 19-year-old son Brett was killed in a tragic road accident.

Supporters of the Brett Kelly Memorial Fund raised the money by holding charity bingos and discos.

Moore Road resident Phyllis said: 96If this piece of equipment saves somebody else from having to go through what we went through then it is worth it.

96The 3,000 in the bank was just wasted money, so we thought we would put it towards the defibrillator.

96I hope that local people will never need it, but if they do it will be there for them.97

David Burke, secretary of the newly formed Friends of Stow Surgery, estimated that when all the money raised on Saturday has been counted the group will be just 1,500 short of its target.

He said: 96The committee has been astonished by the response to the appeal, it really touched a nerve and we were gobsmacked by the kindness of John Entwistle.97

But he stressed that the defibrillator appeal was the Friends92 first project, and once the target was met there would be further campaigns to buy other vital pieces of medical equipment.
