The Waves Are All Right

"Swim in the ocean, mate. The water's warm, but it's bloody cold once you get out."

That's Roger Daltrey, frontman for The Who, describing for Page Two a rare day off on tour. After playing Monday night in Sunrise, the band spent Tuesday at the Four Seasons Palm Beach. At night, Daltrey walked into Cafe Boulud for the pre-party of the March of Dimes Dec. 8 gala. He signed an auction guitar and threw back some red.

So, Rog, where's Pete Townshend?

"We don't hang out," he says, "and that's just fine. We're in tune onstage, but that's it…. What's amazing to me is how big we are in this country. In Europe, people say hi and move along. Here? We can't step outside the hotel without people coming up to us."

False note: venues such as the BankAtlantic Center.

"They're built for sports. I wish they were built for music."
